The Daily 5

Yesterday I awoke early in the morning with a strong urge to finally read my copy of The Daily 5.  I have no idea why, but when I have these urges there's no stopping me.  So, there I was at 8:00 in the morning climbing and digging through my gazillion teacher totes {no exaggeration on the number of totes... they are consuming half of my new two car garage}.  I knew exactly which color tote it was in so I was focused on my mission to find that one book.  After finally making contact with each and every dark green tote in my garage I still couldn't find it.  {Please keep in mind that I just moved from NC to OH so my things still aren't settled.}  Seriously, it was in the one random green tote that somehow got put inside in the computer room!!

Ok, so after my exciting adventure to find my Daily 5 book I started reading and then I kept reading... I couldn't put it down!  I read the entire book yesterday.  Where I have been hiding?  Have I been under a rock for the past four years?!  Why did no one share this book with me sooner and tell me I had to read it?  This book should be given to all new hire teachers.  I was so clueless my first year about running productive literacy stations and small groups.  As embarrassing as it is to admit, I still don't think I'm too good at it after four years!  I'm constantly tweaking and changing my process to try to find what works.

Probably a year or so ago I started hearing about The Daily 5 when I first discovered the bloggy world.  I just kept thinking, "Oh no, this sounds too complicated.  It couldn't possibly work with my students or schedule."  I couldn't have been so wrong.  After reading this book I realize that The Daily 5 can be used in any classroom, with any age group, with any schedule.  Now that I've rejoined the modern teaching world with this amazing program, I am so excited to implement it in the classroom.

Now, I want to hear from you.  Do you use The Daily 5 in your classroom?  If so, how does it work?  What struggles have you had with it?  Do you have any suggestions for a newbie implementing it?  I just love hearing from all of you!

I'm still working on settling into our new apartment and turning all of my 'pinspirations' into reality!  I hope you're enjoying your summer break so far!!  :)

  1. I am particating in the daily 5 book study. This book is so enlightening. I can't wait to go back to school to implement the daily 5. If you have read the book whisperer by Donalyn miller. This is another great book that aligns with the daily 5 philosophy. We have to give our students more tme to read independently.

  3. You'll love Daily Five! I assign rotations, some teachers let students choose. I like to see all my students so I assign groups and rotate in those groups. Go to Teachers Pay Teachers to get tons of Daily Five freebies and items you can pay for. My best advice is take the time to practice the modeling and really state that they are building up stamina. I did it in first grade for three years and love it!

    1. I have been using the Daily 5 and the CAFE for 4 years and I LOVE it! Every year I find that I have to tweak it a bit (without compromising the amazingly productive structure!),but it never lets me down. My biggest tip is to take the time to build the kids' stamina -- you may feel like you're not getting enough done for the first 4-5 weeks, but the payoff is worth it!!

  9. I've been using the Daily 5 for a few years now, with younger primary students. I placed a few more limits on it with them, such as ME being the one to set the rotation schedule for each activity.

This year, I'll be teaching 4th grade, and I think I want to try to give my students more choice with the activities. I'm thinking of trying out a weekly "task sheet" which can hold them accountable for doing their work by listing what I want them to accomplish for the week (i.e. read the basal story x amount of times, or complete x amount of word-work activities to practice spelling and vocabulary words). Haven't figured out how I want the sheet to look yet, but I'll probably post it to my blog if and when I do! :)

I have also awarded you the One Lovely Blog award! Check it out here.

  11. I LOVE Daily 5!!! I've been using it with kinders for 2 years now and it is amazing. It's like they magically teach themselves to read! I think it's because they have time to independently implement what we go over in small groups, instead of learning it and then never really using it because they "can't" read. I love that after the first week of school, my kids go home so excited because they can "read" the pictures of books. My only advice is take your time building stamina. I don't really start D5 in full swing until November. Before that, you end up spending too much time redirecting and modelling to get a fulfilling small group session.
